PERCENTAGES OF NUMBERS (Monday's worksheet)
When finding percentages there are several ways to find a percentage of a number
For example:
If I need to find 10% of £20
I know that 10 goes into 100 ten times, therefore I can divide £20 by ten to find my answer
20 ÷ 10 = 2
Another way to find a percentage of a number is...
15% of £120
I could first find what 1% is by dividing the £120 by 100
120 ÷ 100 = £1.20 so 1% = £1.20
Because I need to find 15%, I can now multiply this number by 15
1.20 x 15 = 18
Therefore 15% of £120 = £18
TURNING DECIMALS INTO FRACTIONS
On Tuesday's worksheet you will be asked to find answers with fractions
Example: 42 ÷ 5 = 8 remainder 4
This can be written as 8.4
We now need to turn this .4 into a fraction
Because the 4 is a tenth we can write it as 4/10 (4 tenths)
It can also be simplified by dividing both numbers by 2, giving your 2/5
Therefore your answer could be 8 and 4/10's or 8 and 2/5's
