Maths Challenge - Number formation

 

This week we would love to see how well your child can write the numbers to 10. 

 

Number formation challenge - can you write all the numbers to 10 on your whiteboard without copying?

We would love to see your child’s progress.

Send us an email or post a picture on the school Facebook page.  

 

Start by encouraging them to copy the numbers from their number line onto their whiteboard.  Encourage them to check if the numbers look the same and are written the right way round.  It is common for children to write numbers backwards.  Just show them the correct way and see if they can remember the next time.  It is important to be positive and give lots of praise. 

Hints to help with writing numbers:

 

If your child needs more support writing below are a couple of ideas

On a page write the numbers in a highlighter or pale coloured marker.  It can help guide your child if they draw over it in pencil. 

For reluctant writers:

 

Sensory tasks are enjoyable and calming and a great way to practice number formation in a fun way.  Using a baking tray spread salt or shaving foam over tray and ask your child to write the number using their finger or paint brush.    

Mental Maths: 

 

One more than...

 

Below is a link to explain a game which can help revise the concept of ‘one more than’ to numbers up to 7.  All you need is pencil, page, and dice.

If you have two dice at home you can write numbers 1-13 on the page and play the game.

Number work:

 

This week we are focusing on number 13

Ask your child questions:  

  • What come before 13
  • What comes after?
  • Can you count up to 13 and back again?  

Ask your child to start at different numbers and count on to 13 e.g. start at 4 and count to 13, start at 7 and count to 13.

Adding:

 

We continue to introduce adding sets to your child. 

 

Ask your child to complete the pages on adding.  They count each set and write the number below.  Your child can touch count each object to find the total. Encourage good formation of numbers when completing tasks.

In your Essential Learning Pack complete the cut and stick activity for y. Look at the pictures, think of the first sound of each word.

HFW Exercise:

 

We’re starting to make some High Frequency Word rockets, we used to make one of these a week in school – our words this week are mum, dad and love. You could try writing some of these words down and hiding them for a Word Hunt, or mixing them up for guessing games.

 

To complete your rocket cut the words out from the table and stick under the correct word on the rocket.

 

Labelling:

 

Label your picture of the dinosaur – the words you need are in the Word Bank at the bottom of the picture?

 

Here are some steps to help you:

1. Look at the picture, what do you think the arrows are pointing to?

2. Get your adult to help you read the words in the Word Bank.

3. Can you match the words to the blank boxes and arrows? Use your initial sounds to help you put the words in the right place.

Writing:

 

Use the worksheet from your Essential Work Pack (week 5) to cut and stick the sentence, ‘I love my mum and dad.’

 

Some clues to help you with this are:

  • Which word has a capital letter? (This one comes first).
  • Which word has a full stop after it? (This word comes at the end).
  • Use your initial sounds to help you sound out the words.
